Langasandur, named after a sandy beach, is an outlying village from 1838 with 52 inhabitants. South of Langasandur lies Gjánoyri where the first Norwegian whaling station in the Faroe Islands was built in 1894. Activities ceased after World War I, after which the whaling station was closed down and removed.
